The Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca ‘Conica’) is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer prized for its classic pyramidal shape and dense, fine-textured needles. Characterized by its vibrant green foliage and a remarkably tidy growth habit, this cultivar typically adds only two to four inches of height per year. This glacial pace allows it to function as a long-term architectural staple in the garden without the risk of quickly outgrowing its intended space or requiring frequent intervention.

In the landscape, the primary benefit of the Dwarf Alberta Spruce is its ability to provide year-round structure and “evergreen bones” with minimal effort. Its naturally symmetrical form creates a formal, manicured aesthetic that requires virtually no pruning, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance foundation plantings or flanking entryways. Beyond its ornamental value, its compact size makes it highly versatile; it excels in rock gardens, small urban plots, and large decorative containers. Furthermore, its exceptional cold hardiness ensures it remains a resilient focal point even in harsh northern climates, offering a reliable pop of color when the rest of the garden has gone dormant.

I recently received my order for a sweetbay magnolia and 2 Alberta spruce. All 3 arrived in great condition, packaged well and no signs of stress. All were planted with a few weeks to get a root hold before going dormat and show no signs of stress. I am in zone 7 so the magnolia might loose its leaves this winter being so newly transplanted, but so far all three seem happy and well adjusted. In the past, I've also received a tulip poplar from Old House Trees, and the first winter after planting it had some top death from frost burn, but it has adapted well and is growing great. The trees here are not bargain twigs, they will thrive given their correct planting conditions.
