Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) is a deciduous tree native to the eastern United States. It’s prized for its ornamental features, including its fragrant, creamy-white flowers, vibrant fall foliage, and unique, exfoliating bark. Sourwood trees are known for their clusters of bell-shaped flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Sourwood trees are versatile landscape plants that can be used as specimen trees, shade trees, or in mixed shrub borders. Their dense, spreading branches provide excellent shade, making them ideal for patios and gardens. In autumn, sourwood trees display a stunning array of colors, often ranging from yellow and orange to red and purple. Their exfoliating bark, which peels away in thin strips, adds visual interest throughout the year. Sourwood trees are relatively low-maintenance and adaptable to various soil conditions, making them a popular choice for gardeners seeking a beautiful and resilient tree.
