Gray Dogwood

Gray Dogwood (Cornus racemosa) is a deciduous shrub native to eastern North America that typically grows between 10 to 15 feet tall. Known for its tough, adaptable nature, it features distinct grayish-green foliage that transitions to a subtle purplish-red color in the fall. In late spring, the shrub produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers. These blooms give way to bright white berries in late summer, which are held on striking, contrastingly bright red stalks (pedicels). Even after the birds devour the fruit, these colorful red stalks persist into winter, providing excellent seasonal interest alongside its smooth gray bark.

From an ecological standpoint, the gray dogwood is a powerhouse. It is highly valued for supporting biodiversity, serving as a critical food source for over 100 species of birds and various mammals that rely on its high-fat berries. Its dense, multi-stemmed branching habit also offers exceptional nesting cover and protection for wildlife.

In landscape design, Gray Dogwood is incredibly versatile due to its extreme tolerance for harsh conditions. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and effortlessly handles both wet soils and drought, making it a go-to choice for challenging sites. Because it spreads via underground suckers to form dense thickets, it is highly effective for erosion control on banks and slopes, stabilizing soil efficiently. It is frequently utilized in naturalized areas, woodland edges, and conservation plantings, or massed to create durable, low-maintenance privacy screens and native hedgerows. For more manicured gardens, its suckering habit can easily be controlled with minor pruning.
