Pitlolly Pine
Pinus rigida x taeda
❄️ Zone 4-7☀️ full sun💧 dry to wet
Price range: $12.00 through $16.00
Pitlolly Pine (Pinus rigida x taeda) is a hybrid conifer resulting from the cross between Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) and Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda). It combines the hardiness and disease resistance of Pitch Pine with the rapid growth and high yield of Loblolly Pine.
This hybrid grows significantly faster than either parent species, making it a desirable choice for reforestation and timber production. It inherits the disease resistance of pitch pine, making it less susceptible to pests and diseases compared to other pine species. Pitlolly Pines are known for their hardiness and adaptability to various soil types and climates. The hybrid’s fast growth and high yield make it an excellent choice for timber production, producing high-quality lumber for construction and other applications. Its dense foliage can be used to create natural windbreaks, protecting structures and landscapes from strong winds.

Great condition and size
The pitlolly I ordered was on the larger size of the range they advertised and it’s the exact tree I wanted. I’ll grow it in a pot for a year to expand its root system before planting in ground next fall

High Hopes for the Pitlolly
Anxious to see how this hybrid pine performs here in southeast Ohio. The Pitch Pine itself occurs naturally in our area. See its range in the Wiki article. In part, it says Pitch pine is known to cross with pond loblolly and shortleaf pines. One of those crosses is the pitlolly pine (pinus x rigitaeda), a natural hybrid between the loblolly pine and the pitch pine. This hybrid combines the tall size of the loblolly pine and the cold-hardiness of the pitch pine. This hybrid was used as substitute of loblolly pine and has been extensively planted in South Korea. Southern yellow pines grow in southeastern U. S. but not in Ohio. All five of the pine seedlings I received appear healthy and raring to go. I have high hopes they will do well here.
