Birds Nest Spruce

Bird’s Nest Spruce (Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’) is a popular dwarf evergreen shrub prized for its dense, flat-topped, and spreading growth habit. It earns its common name from its distinctive branch arrangement, where horizontal layers fan outward around a slightly depressed center, resembling a bird’s nest. A very slow grower, it typically reaches a mature height of 2 to 3 feet with a spread of 3 to 4 feet, featuring bright lime-green spring growth that matures into deep, rich green needles year-round.

In landscape design, this low-growing evergreen is widely used in rock gardens, foundation plantings, low borders, and as an accent plant or ground cover on slopes. Its practical benefits make it an excellent addition to residential gardens: it is exceptionally cold-hardy, deer-resistant, and virtually maintenance-free, requiring no routine pruning to keep its compact shape. Once established, it tolerates various soil conditions and urban environments, offering year-round structure and vibrant color.
